WHOLESALE BUYER GUIDE

Distributor vs. Wholesaler vs. Manufacturer: What Is the Difference?

These labels describe roles in a supply chain, but businesses often perform more than one role. The name a company uses does not prove its relationship with a brand.

Manufacturer

Makes or controls production of goods and may sell directly or through channel partners.

Distributor

Purchases and resells products in a defined supply chain. Some distributors have formal brand or territory agreements; others distribute goods without being an exclusive or authorized representative.

Wholesaler

Sells goods in business quantities to retailers, resellers, institutions, or other companies. A wholesaler may buy from manufacturers, distributors, importers, or other wholesalers.

What buyers should verify

Ask who the contracting seller is, where the goods come from, what documentation accompanies the order, and whether any claimed brand authorization can be substantiated. Never infer authorization from the word distributor alone.

Questions buyers ask

Is every distributor authorized?

No. Authorization is a separate factual claim that should be supported.

Can one company be both distributor and wholesaler?

Yes. The roles can overlap.

Does buying from a wholesaler guarantee marketplace eligibility?

No. Marketplace eligibility and documentation are controlled by the marketplace.
